Pregnancy and exercise--each one is a complex phenomenon. Taken together, they may constitute the most complicated interaction in human physiology.

While it appears that in most situations exercise begun prior to or early in pregnancy has benefits for both mother and offspring, there remain many details to be studied and understood. Specific cautions and warnings are still few and fairly obvious.

As we learn which genotypes are more susceptible to disorders such as preeclampsia, we are also learning how exercise may reduce some risks for actually developing such disorders. The impact of exercise on the female body's many biochemical and psychophysiologic systems during pregnancy and the postpartum period is under study.

To facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the effects of pre/postnatal exercise and make this information available to interested professionals, DTP maintains two unique features on this website:   Research Updates and a series of Neuro-Endocrine-Immuno Metabolic Maps on pregnancy and exercise.
